Our community from the local level to the international level
has been tested in the past few years. Whether or not we are aligned with our national government’s policies and actions, we have been challenged to reflect upon and review our relationship to community, whether it be our neighbors here, or our neighbors in the Middle East and beyond.

How connected are we? How polarized? How expanded—or contracted? How hopeful, How fearful?

You may be familiar with the story of Indra’s Web, which basically states that the world is comprised of a vast web of energy and matter extending itself as, and comprising, our universe. At each intersection of the strands is a multi-faceted jewel. One jewel reflects all the rest out into infinity. So when a shift or transformation occurs in any part of the Web, all are touched and transformed.

In reality, when there is fragmentation, fear, enmity, or disease in any part of the world, we all are affected. Whether we are part of an army, a member of the Congress, a mother in Iraq, a student in France, or doctor in China, we are all affected by changes anywhere in the web of life. Similarly, when any one of us advances in learning, creativity, empathy, love, skill or compassion, the effects are felt in expanding waves of relationship. Our hope is that you will join us in beginning to work with the inherent tensions, stresses, fractures of our unique historical moment as well as with the positive new energies and potentials that are now coming into play.

We would remind you of the 9/11 Artist’s Respond exhibit, which inaugurated our public existence as an Art Council. The overwhelming response of the community was gratitude for providing a space in which our emotional energies could be expressed, witnessed and reoriented through art.

In this new moment in history, we would like to find a way to expand that artistic vision to be more inclusive—and to focus it again on our Present Time. We are extending the invitation to collaboration to all kinds of artists in our community- musicians, actors, poets, dancers, painters, photographers, etc- in groups or as individuals.

What do you feel about Now? How can we weigh in and help create the next wave of cultural expression? We would like the event called Art for the Heart of Our Times to be a mulifaceted show/event which will form the basis of an ongoing Cultural Arts Network. This will greatly increase the impact of the Arts Community in Petaluma.

The show will take place on September 14, 2003 at Walnut Park in conjuction with the Progressive Festival in Walnut Park.

Creativity is a fundamental characteristic of all life forms. Whether we are starting fresh, re-creating or pro-creating, we are all ultimately creative. We believe we can engage our community in activating that inherent creativity and revitalizing ourselves with an awareness and cooperative spirit that will generate a future full of diversity, personal truth telling, expanding wisdom, beauty, and belief in one another.

It is important to know that there are members in the Arts Community who have expressed reluctance to participate in an event such as this, believing that our work, in these controversial times, will be slanted toward one "political" viewpoint or another. This is not the case. We believe the Whole will speak louder than any one part, in potentially new and unexpected ways. We ask that you take care to respectfully reflect upon whatever ideas are brought forth within the context of this "show", and that you find ways to work with It All in a positive spirit.

Our intention is to move toward a new way of Being that brings increasing synthesis, expanded meaning, and fulfilling experience to the beating Heart of our Times.

All Sonoma County artists are eligible to enter the show.
